TPP-enzymes catalyze the formation/cleavage of C-C bonds between carbonyl-containing compounds. The reaction is mediated by the bound cofactor Thiaminpyrophosphate (TPP), which gives this group of enzymes its name. TPP-enzymes provide a biocatalytic approach to access diversely substituted, chiral 2-hydroxy-ketones valuable reaction intermediates for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
